Our Story

The Jakob F. Von Der Vellen Memorial  was created to remember Jake's caring spirit, his drive for excellence, school participation and community involvement that embodied his life. Jake graduated from Medina High School at the top of his class and continued to excel at Ohio Wesleyan University.  His caring heart endeared him to others who recognized Jake as a natural leader.  Education was paramount to his success.  Jake gave his time, talent and treasure to many charitable organizations including: Relay for Life, Colleges Against Cancer, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, Alzheimer's Association and Diabetes foundation.  He was a natural athlete and an avid sports fan. Sadly, Jake was killed in a car accident on March 16, 2012 and the foundation was created in his name and memory.  The mission of the JFV Foundation is to support Jake's legacy of giving back to his community.

Needs Based Assistance

The Jakob F. Von Der Vellen Memorial Foundation is a non-profit organization established to honor Jakob’s legacy as a natural athlete, a strong leader, an avid sports fan, and a believer in the importance of team building, sportsmanship, and good moral behavior. Our mission is to provide youth access to sports through financial aid and mentorship.

Ongoing financial assistance is provided to the Medina Youth Baseball Association to defray equipment costs and  to make baseball more affordable and accessible to youth and their families. Needs-based stipends are considered  for current and prospective players.

We strive to give children the same opportunities that Jakob had growing up.  We hope to ensure the next generation of athletes is able to reach their full potential, learning values that Jakob held so dear. Click the logo below for more information.

Educational Scholarships

The Jakob F. Von Der Vellen Memorial Foundation is dedicated to honoring the legacy of Jake Von Der Vellen, a beloved member of the Median High School community. We provide graduating seniors from Median High School with scholarships opportunities to help them reach their dreams.
Through our annual scholarship program, we are able to recognize and reward good students who demonstrate a commitment to their school community, hold a GPA of 3.5 or higher, participate in sports, and hold a part time job. Our board of directors carefully considers each application to ensure that the recipients embody the same values and spirit that Jake did. Scholarship information is found on the High School Black Board or through the College office.  Click the logo below for more information.

Kimberlie Goldsberry, the Dean of Students at Ohio Wesleyan University

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these two young men, who were brothers in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

Jake was an exceptional person who brought much to the Ohio Wesleyan campus. He was president of Sig Ep and was committed to involving all his brothers in community service. He will be sorely missed but forever remembered.

We will share more news as it becomes available, including plans to come together as an OWU family to remember Jake and pray for Vince.
